The Voyage So Far (aka: 3 episodes in and we’re questioning EVERYTHING)

"It's been three episodes. Calm the f**k down." - Buckers

We're only three episodes into this weird little podcast experiment, so obviously it's the perfect time to sit down and intensely review our progress… and it turns out, our identity, world view, and everything we thought we knew about ourselves. BUCKLE UP BAB , this one gets deep.

This episode is a very (and we cannot stress this enough) rough around the edges, off the cuff, totally unplanned episode - it’s a front row seat to the show* you never asked for: our first proper catch up since launching JMTBP. No guest, no notes, just two overly-analytical women reflecting on our podcasting experience so far. You may not be surprised to discover this involves a run down of the many, MANY ways we've already managed to overthink the entire process🙂

*yes, expect a few rogue show tunes.

We chat (probably slightly too) honestly about the emotional turbulence that has come hand in hand with putting this ‘thing’ we’re creating out into the world. Are we obsessively refreshing download numbers even though we said we wouldn't? Yes. Are we questioning whether several people in Virginia are *actually* listening? Yes (but seriously - if that’s you, please dm us!). And are we still trying to get over ourselves enough to post promo clips despite questioning every imperfection and ‘why is my face DOING that?' Also yes.

What we expected to be a quick lighthearted catch up to share a few brain nuggets from our first month or so in the podcasting game (assuming this is a phrase) ended up becoming a - quelle surprise - much bigger conversation. We chat about confidence, creativity, getting older, learning to enjoy where you're at, and the seemingly ongoing process of self-acceptance. *sigh* - sorry if you thought this was going to be a simple ‘how-to’ guide - turns out that just wasn't the vibe for this one!

In this episode:

  • What we've learnt (or at least observed) after publishing our first three episodes
  • Why I was being a dick to myself
  • "done is better than perfect" vs. “just being a bit sloppy”
  • Us reading out a list of countries people are supposedly listening to us in, and fully suspecting it to be a scam
  • How long is "too long"? (referring to episode duration…)
  • How making this podcast is making us question everything about ourselves and our own self confidence
  • Katie getting deep about enjoying the phase you're in, instead of constantly chasing the next milestone
  • The internal battle: is what I’m saying *actually* any good? DO PEOPLE LIKE IT? Help.
  • Patriarchal bullshit about how we look during podcast recordings
  • Peaks and troughs, ebbs and flows... does anyone know which ones we’re supposed to want to be in?
  • Ancient make up: all hail the noble Barry M Dazzle Dust (p.s can you shed any light on the name of that no.17 lippy?!)
  • Katie’s abnormally large head
  • A little blast of Oklahoma (when the wind comes right behind the rain etc etc).

Enjoy!

About the Podcast

Just Make The Bloody Podcast
Exploring what it takes to make a bloody great podcast. Whether you've alreay launched or it's still on your to-do list.
Just Make The Bloody Podcast is for anyone who’s had ‘launch a podcast’ sitting on their to-do list forever.

Hosted by Buckers (hello, that’s me), this show is an opportunity to explore what it really takes to make a bloody great podcast, whatever that might look like for you…

As a podcast producer I’m the first to champion other people getting behind the mic, but when it comes to putting my own voice in the spotlight, I’ll pass thanks…
But apparently we can’t just live happily ever after in the comfort zone (rude) and so the time has come: here ends the pod-crastination, and here begins my podcasting *j o u r n e y* (bloody hell) and you’re invited too, so hop in and make yourself comfy!
This is me taking the ultimate exercise in accountability: I’m grabbing the ‘visibility bull’ by the horns, finally taking my own advice to ‘just start’, and giving myself permission to figure it out on the way.

Who better to learn from than those already in the game? I’ll be chatting with other hosts and getting geeky about their podcast process, bringing you behind-the-scenes chats with my podcast-obsessed wing-woman (and long time school friend) Katie, and the odd solo episode if the mood takes me. Each episode will be a chance to learn more about podcasting: the process of recording, launching, maintaining and growing one.

This is not a ‘podcasting-by-numbers’ vibe. I’m not on a mission to find some secret magic formula. The idea is to give you a taste of everything, and explore together the many different ways a podcast can be approached, recorded, produced and developed. Think of it like podcast tapas: take what works for you, leave what doesn’t, then build your own. Find your podcast patatas bravas if you will…

This show is for anyone wanting to explore the process of making a podcast. Whatever stage of podcasting you’re at, whether you’re already publishing episodes, or you just have an idea scribbled on the back of a receipt, you’re welcome here. So grab your headphones and a biccie (make mine a jammy dodger) and let’s just make the bloody podcast!
