Building a #1 podcast with award winning content creator Alison Perry

"Done is better than perfect." Alison Perry

Welcome to our very first guest episode!

Joining us is the gorgeous Alison Perry - writer, author, blogger, and host of UK #1 parenting podcast, Not Another Mummy Podcast. Alison has been podcasting since 2017 (which in podcast years is practically prehistoric), long before celebrities rocked up with their branded mic muffs.

Alison shares almost a decade’s worth of podcasting wisdom, from how she spotted a gap in the market, pieced together a podcast from Google searches and Facebook forums, and kept showing up episode after episode. Alison has interviewed everyone from bestselling authors to the Prime Minister - in our book she is living proof that consistency and backing yourself (and being a generally fantastic human) really can take you to some unexpected places.

This chat also covers confidence, visibility, editing, how to get great guests, podcasting through the pandemic, and why waiting until you feel ‘ready’ is the nonsense standing in the way of you launching your own podcast.

In this episode:

  • Launching a podcast before the step-by-step guides and purpose built software
  • The ‘secret’ behind almost a decade of successful podcasting
  • How to land brilliant guests (without cold emailing hundreds of strangers)
  • How Alison’s podcast led to an email from Number 10 landing in her inbox...
  • Why confidence isn't something that just arrives…
  • How to change your relationship with confidence and visibility
  • How long should a podcast episode be?
  • ‘Katie’s Questions’ - she’s got her own jingle and also just happens to ask Alison a great question: what comes after podcasting?
  • The a-pod-calypse *thunder crash* - if you could choose just one podcast to survive the apodcalypse what would it be?
  • Latex babies.
  • A selection of entirely unnecessary sound effects because… well, fun.

Alison teaches us that the opportunities that podcasting creates are almost impossible to predict, that ‘done is better than perfect’, and that the more scary things you do, the smaller our comfort zone becomes.

We hope you enjoy this episode (because we very much enjoyed making it!)

About the Podcast

Just Make The Bloody Podcast
Exploring what it takes to make a bloody great podcast. Whether you've alreay launched or it's still on your to-do list.
Just Make The Bloody Podcast is for anyone who’s had ‘launch a podcast’ sitting on their to-do list forever.

Hosted by Buckers (hello, that’s me), this show is an opportunity to explore what it really takes to make a bloody great podcast, whatever that might look like for you…

As a podcast producer I’m the first to champion other people getting behind the mic, but when it comes to putting my own voice in the spotlight, I’ll pass thanks…
But apparently we can’t just live happily ever after in the comfort zone (rude) and so the time has come: here ends the pod-crastination, and here begins my podcasting *j o u r n e y* (bloody hell) and you’re invited too, so hop in and make yourself comfy!
This is me taking the ultimate exercise in accountability: I’m grabbing the ‘visibility bull’ by the horns, finally taking my own advice to ‘just start’, and giving myself permission to figure it out on the way.

Who better to learn from than those already in the game? I’ll be chatting with other hosts and getting geeky about their podcast process, bringing you behind-the-scenes chats with my podcast-obsessed wing-woman (and long time school friend) Katie, and the odd solo episode if the mood takes me. Each episode will be a chance to learn more about podcasting: the process of recording, launching, maintaining and growing one.

This is not a ‘podcasting-by-numbers’ vibe. I’m not on a mission to find some secret magic formula. The idea is to give you a taste of everything, and explore together the many different ways a podcast can be approached, recorded, produced and developed. Think of it like podcast tapas: take what works for you, leave what doesn’t, then build your own. Find your podcast patatas bravas if you will…

This show is for anyone wanting to explore the process of making a podcast. Whatever stage of podcasting you’re at, whether you’re already publishing episodes, or you just have an idea scribbled on the back of a receipt, you’re welcome here. So grab your headphones and a biccie (make mine a jammy dodger) and let’s just make the bloody podcast!
